Notifications in Moodle

One of our Edwiser patron @Erick shared this problem with us,
he has courses which are around 200 hours long and students tend to drop-off during the learning process.

He was looking for a notification system that alerts the students about the course status and brings them back to the course to continue their learning.

There are is a ready plugin (https://moodle.org/plugins/pluginversions.php?plugin=block_userexpire) but since it is not properly maintained he is not able to use it for his need.

Is it just me or you guys too have faced the need for better notification system in Moodle. Share your thoughts and let's create a better solution together.
